Study: 89% of Local Business Listings Remain Unclaimed by Their Owners

A new analysis of 436 U.S. local businesses finds the vast majority have not been claimed by a verified owner — a blind spot for local discoverability.

Study: 89% of Local Business Listings Remain Unclaimed by Their Owners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Local City Walk

A new analysis of 436 local businesses listed in the Local City Walk directory finds that 89% (387 of 436) remain unclaimed by a verified owner — meaning the business itself has not taken control of its own public listing.

The finding points to a widespread "verification gap" in local search: the businesses exist, but their owners have not claimed the free, verified presence that helps customers find them. Just 49 of the 436 listings are claimed by a real owner account.

Key figures

  • 436 local businesses analyzed (across TX, NV, AZ, CA, FL, and more)
  • 387 (89%) unclaimed by a verified owner
  • 49 claimed
  • 95 carry a verified badge

Why it matters

For local economies, an unclaimed listing is an invisible business. Customers searching for "best [service] near me" are far more likely to reach a competitor who has claimed and optimized their presence.

Methodology

Point-in-time snapshot of 436 businesses with valid listing slugs in the Local City Walk directory. "Claimed" means the listing is associated with a verified owner account. Full methodology and the underlying dataset are available in our 2026 Local Business Landscape Report.
